My quest to make meditation an integral aspect of our daily lives is stronger today than ever before. Along with a sitting meditation practice, I encourage you to live each moment of your life with meditative awareness, what I call heart awareness. If we want to ascend to the consciousness of a new earth, we must transform all fear into the resonance of love. This is not an abstract spiritual practice separate from the activities of our busy lives but a necessary and vital focus to heal the daily stresses, strains and dis-eases - and to grow into this new consciousness. Our attitude to every moment is recorded in the energy field of our bodies and the universe. Through heart-centred living we evolve it all in love.
Meditation techniques grew out of ancient wisdom, and are evolving, as we are.Through the inner work of meditation, mystics of all the great traditions discovered what science is only now confirming. As we lost our practice of inner work, so we lost our sense of the sacred mysteries of life. With the introduction of meditation as an integral part of live, so we can once again access this universal realm of consciousness where we experience our true nature and inherent Oneness.
In recent years, meditation has been used for stress management, and love has been recognised for its health benefits. Research shows heart intelligence brings, not only greater wellbeing, but greater intuition, insight and creativity. In other words, science is beginning to place the heart at the heart of physical, mental and emotional health. Ancient traditions have always known the heart is the key. I love these words from modern-day Sufi mystic, Kabir Helminski, "The heart is an intelligence beyond intellect, a knowing that operates at a subconscious level, the only human faculty expansive enough to embrace the infinite qualities of the universe. Intellect can take us so far; it can think about faith, hope and love for instance, but it cannot entirely experience these qualities. This is the function of the heart."
Hi EveryOne,
Do you notice how I start this communication, this connecting, with 'Hi EveryOne'?
Each of you is a unique and individual self, manifest as a perfect expression of Oneness. So, there is the tantalising contradiction of EveryOne. We understand that there is only One and today it is often referred to as Oneness which has birthed Oneness blessings, Oneness universities and so many other Oneness expressions - and, all of this with a very rapid acceleration in the past few years.
This apparent contradiction of EveryOne is the mystery behind individuation and essence. The oneness that we are is our essence, and the process of individuation is the sense of a separate self. This sense of a separate self, the ego is a part of our development and is integral to our healthy and functional development. Our birth and childhood experiences contribute to how this sense of self emerges and, as we well know, this is often in a very fragmented and distorted way. Far from our individual self manifesting as a perfect expression of Oneness, our essence is overlooked, hidden and forgotten. We are lost in a sense of self reflecting inadequacy, self-doubt and shame.
For those of you who have worked with me in individual and group work, you will know that a very significant part of this is about discovering that our sense of self is only ever a projection, and that who we truly are is a wonderment beyond any language we can ever give it. However, using language we call this spirit, essence, consciousness, love, God, source and so many other words to describe the indescribable. But just because it cannot be described does not mean it has no relevance in our lives. Indeed, it is most relevant because it is what is most real, most authentic, most intelligent and most powerful. Beyond our limiting projections of selfhood, we find our true Self where we know ourselves in Oneness. We connect and relate to others in an entirely different way - a way founded on our authentic Self. Quite naturally, our empathy and ability to care for ourselves and others becomes one and the same thing. Embracing others is all about embracing ourselves. And embracing ourselves is all about knowing who we truly are, rather than believing the projections of who we think we are.
This is an offering that came from a deep meditative awareness. Gratitude to the wonderful visual artists and my beloved who composed the music and made the clip for me.
Earlier this morning I was saying to a dear friend, " I long to simplify my life and yet it seems to get more and more complicated". Many of you have heard me going on about my email inbox. No sooner have I cleared it out and it is swamped again - a little like the way the lawn grows in summer - no sooner finished, and it needs mowing again! As with the lawn, I have to keep in mind its intrinsic blessing. So often we overlook the blessings and just feel overwhelmed and inundated.
We understand that all pathways have obstacles, but we struggle, not flow, on our journey. Everyday we hear of dreams lost, loneliness in a teeming world, passions no longer pursued. We hear of life as a deadline, life feeling out of control, and life as "just too hard". We hear of unhappiness and a loss of zest for life.
We also hear of great shifts happening in ways that have not happened before: a documentary called, "Go back to where you came from", investigating prejudice and ignorance, AND opening hearts; an enormous groundswell against nuclear power as our source of energy; a politician talking about a global parliament where, "this 'people's assembly' would be based on one person, one vote, one value."
Yet, look at the comments in response to these words - "A utopian fantasy", and "It's harmless for people to advocate it. But it won't happen in the life time of a baby born today who lives for 80 years.'' There are many hilarious examples of hopelessly inaccurate predictions said with just such conviction and certainty. One of my favourites is, "It will be years - not in my time - before a woman will become Prime Minister." Guess who said that? Margaret Thatcher.
They may say that it is harmless for people to advocate utopia but it is undoubtedly harmful for people to advocate cynicism. To ridicule dreams and inspiration is to obliterate our humanity. We hide our selves and our vulnerabilities which makes a mockery of our humanity. I write in my book Love's Alchemy, "The vulnerability of my body is endlessly vulnerable. The kaleidoscope of my emotions may mock certainty with doubt and fear, and yet, beyond all that, I know with absolute certainty that all is well. The sentiment of me and my story is undone, revealing the pure force that I am; that is all there is; that is love."
What is our humanity? To meet deadlines, expectations and goals. To bypass our dreams. To fortify our isolation through invulnerability. Do we really care for ourselves and others, our children, colleagues and neighbours?. Do we put our joy and happiness ahead of what we "should" be doing? Do we care before we critisise? Do we flow with our day, rather than struggle with how we think it should be unfolding?
Don't be afraid of life. Be afraid of missing out on love - for live and love are one and the same thing.
What is the way to spiritual intelligence? We know that if we live our lives from egoic mind, we are living our lives confined within a very small box. We also know how controlling the egoic mind can be, not stopping for a moment. That is the power of its vicelike grip. Our minds are conditioned to think in terms of difficulty, fabricating obstacles out of our fear. The obstacles are of the mind itself. Ideas of what is lacking and what is needed, worrying about situations and their outcomes, seeing situations as problems that need to be solved, presuming something is wrong, perceiving in shoulds and should nots. The relentless hold of the mind, with all its apparently complicated and difficult issues, is the blockade to freedom. Stop the mind and the blockade is dismantled. "How?", I hear you ask. "How do I awaken my spiritual intelligence, my heart intelligence?"If I may answer with a quote from the Taittiriya Upanishad, one of our most ancient and sacred texts, "Practice of meditation is its heart." These few words say it so simply, and so much more. Through meditation we still the mind. With a still mind, quite naturally we are able to access our heart intelligence, our intuition, insight and other psychic abilities. They become an inevitable and natural byproduct of our spiritual practice. Interestingly, if we work at psychic abilities for their own sake, this is not only counterproductive but can also be the long way round and very arduous. As the heart of spirituality, meditation brings a profound awareness of what life is all about. Love. For life is love in form. When we arrive at a place where we are tired enough of life as a struggle, we will find the will to meditate and make life all about love. Your heart is the portal.
We are exploring the idea of a blog to focus on conversations about consciousness, musings on mystiscism and stories of love. We would love to hear your stories of how the transformative power of love works in your life. Join us in a celebration of the heart and the amazing awareness it brings.
